Why use digital photography in the classroom?

Digital photography is much easier and can be less time consuming than taking pictures with a traditional camera and sending the film off to be development. Teachers and students are better able to see if the picture is exactly what they want, save it to their computer, and import it into a program quickly. With the cost of digital camera decreasing it is becoming more available to classrooms.

General Ideas

Make a slide show or movie of pictures taken during events and activities during the day. Post these on the Internet for parents, grandparents, etc. to view.

To begin the school year, create a digital pictorial of faculty and staff for students. This would be great to have for students new to the school.

Take pictures on a field trip to create a movie or slide show with the students adding memories.

Create ABC books by having students take pictures and inserting them into WORD or something similar.

Students can create educational videos instead of the traditional poster project or book report. Ex. My 1st grader just made a movie using Photo Story 3 about the Slinkly for his invention project.

Document the scientific method

Create a Virtual Field Trip to your school, community, or state to publish

Make trading cards or authors, scientists, themselves, and so much more!

Teachers can also create a digital yearbook of all things they did during the year and give the students at the end of the year.

Assign pairs of students to walk through the school to find such examples of geometric shapes as circles, triangles, parallel lines, obtuse angles, and so on. Label each photo and create a geometry book

Patti Irish (7th grade science) is creating an on-line field guide. She has her students bring in insects they have found (preferably live). They identify them, take pictures with the digital camera, and do research to find out about habitat, eating habits, etc. They then write it up in field guide form and she hopes to publish their work on her Web site.

Mary C. Midgette from Framingham Public Schools in framingham, MA used digital camera in the art classes to:

1. used digital cameras to take their pictures

2. brought these pictures into a graphics program where they could manipulate the layout, color, special effects. etc.

3. scanned in or took digital shots of other pictures, poems, objects of meaning to them

4. imported these symbols into their portraits and layered their image with items of meaning to create a collage effect.

5. final products were then uploaded to the Cyberfaces web site at http://www.cyberfaces.org

6. final products were also printed on a color banner and placed into a slide show to display at open house, parent-teacher nights, etc.

7. students were then asked to write brief essays about their creation process, explaining their use of color, objects, words, etc. for interpretation.

Flickr is a free site which allows anyone to upload 100 MB monthly and create 3 sets. You can set any photo to be public or private, blog about the photo, add notes and tags to your photos, and use Flickr Uploader (free) to quickly upload your pictures. You can also search flickr for any type of picture. Say you are teaching about flowers - then search for flowers and save the pictures to use in a video, PowerPoint, or around the room for visuals.
